A recent article in Bloomberg titled “Coloplast Said to Pay $16 Million to Settle Mesh Lawsuits” brings to light more issues with defective transvaginal mesh products. It was reported that Coloplast, manufacturer of transvaginal mesh inserts, agreed to pay $16 million to settle mesh lawsuits.
The article states that in 2012, the FDA ordered Coloplast, Johnson & Johnson, Bard and more than 30 other vaginal-implant makers to study rates of organ damage and complications linked to the implants. In court filings, Johnson & Johnson stated that over the last 15 years more than one million women have received vaginal mesh inserts. These devices are most commonly used surgical procedures to repair pelvic organ prolapse (POP), stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women.
Coloplast’s lawyer, Lana Varney stated that the company is interested in resolving other lawsuits and to “work out comprehensive settlements with individual lawyers that resolve all Coloplast vaginal-mesh cases to ‘buy their peace’ and move on down the road.”
