Modified IVC blood clot filters by medical device manufacturer C.R. Bard continue to make news headlines. It began with the 2015 NBC News investigation “Did Forged Signature Clear Way for Dangerous Blood-Clot Filter?”
The recent NBC News article Why Did Firm Keep Selling Problem Blood-Clot Filters? covered this topic recently saying “A company that made a blood-clot filter associated with 27 deaths and hundreds of problems replaced the device with a modified version that it knew had similar and potentially fatal flaws soon after it was put on the market.”
Bard is one of 11 who manufacturers IVC blood clot devices. The filters are implanted in the largest vein in the body, called the inferior vena cava. According to the articles and the investigation, problems arise with Bard’s spider-shaped IVC filters when parts of the device break loose inside the body. Movement or migration through the body can occur and can puncture or cause perforation of organs and severe damage.

It is estimated that nearly 250,000 people in the U.S. are implanted with blood clot filters, most without incident. However, as Joe Johnson stated in the interview there are at least 100,000 people who have been implanted with the Bard G2 filters. Given Bard’s own figures showing a 50% success rate, this medical device has the potential to injure more than it has helped.
Negligence by medical device manufacturers like Bard does not need to go unresolved. Consumers who have been injured may have legal recourse against the manufacturer, designer or distributor of a faulty medical device.
