The House recently approved a bipartisan bill meant to streamline the government approval of medical devices and drugs. A Fox News politics article titled: “Medical Research Bill Passes House despite Last Minute Opposition,” reports that the bill included provisions that speed up how quickly medical devices and drugs reach consumers saying: “Other provisions would speed how many drugs and devices reach consumers, such as letting regulators approve some medical equipment with shorter studies using fewer people. New uses of existing drugs could be based partly on case studies and other processes that are less rigorous than traditional clinical trials.”

Defenders of the current Food and Drug Administration approval process believe that the bill could provide perks to medical device and drug companies at the expense of safety and science.

Medical devices or pharmaceutical drugs are created to help people, but when they are poorly designed, are unsafe and fail, the manufacturer needs to be held accountable.
